Overview
Diagnostic venous duplex ultrasound combines two types of information: images of the veins and Doppler measurement of blood flow. This allows the team to evaluate vein anatomy, valve function, vein size, and blood-flow direction.
This study may be recommended when symptoms suggest venous disease, when varicose veins need medical evaluation, when skin changes are present, or when treatment planning requires a more complete view of the vein system.

How the treatment works
A gel is placed on the skin, and the ultrasound probe is moved along the leg. Doppler technology measures blood flow while imaging shows vein structure. The exam may be performed while standing or in different positions.
