Overview
Visual sclerotherapy is the classic treatment for visible spider veins on the legs. The clinician treats veins that can be seen at the surface using a fine needle and sclerosing solution.
This treatment is best for cosmetic spider veins and small visible veins that are not being driven by untreated underlying reflux. If symptoms, varicose veins, or recurrent spider veins are present, ultrasound evaluation may be recommended first.
What Visual is used for
- Red, blue, or purple spider veins
- Small visible surface veins
- Cosmetic vein clusters on thighs, calves, ankles, or behind the knees
- Selected small veins causing local burning or itching
How the treatment works
A fine needle is placed into the visible vein, and a small amount of sclerosing solution is injected. The vein closes and gradually fades.
What to expect
Results develop gradually. Many patients need multiple sessions spaced apart.
Recovery and aftercare
Compression may be recommended. Patients are commonly advised to walk, avoid hot baths briefly, avoid intense exercise briefly, and protect treated areas from direct sun while healing.
Insurance and medical necessity
Visual sclerotherapy for spider veins is generally cosmetic and not covered by insurance.
