Bulging Veins

Raised, prominent veins that rise above the skin — often a sign of underlying reflux.

Quick Facts

Common Signs

Raised veins above the skin, tenderness, aching

Often Related To

Refluxing source vein, varicose disease

First Step

Duplex ultrasound to identify the source

Insurance

Often covered for medical evaluation and treatment when symptoms and ultrasound findings support medical necessity.

Overview

Bulging veins are raised veins that sit above the skin surface. They are often varicose vein branches and may be connected to a deeper refluxing source vein.

Common symptoms

  • Raised veins above the skin
  • Soreness when standing
  • Aching or heaviness
  • Swelling worsening through the day
  • Visible blue or green tint

Why it happens

Blood pressure builds in superficial veins when deeper valves leak, causing the surface vein to enlarge and protrude.

When to seek evaluation

If veins are painful, growing, or interfering with daily activity.

How we evaluate it

Duplex ultrasound to identify the source vein and treatment plan.

Treatment options

EVLT, RFA, VenaSeal, Varithena, ambulatory phlebectomy, microphlebectomy, or foam sclerotherapy.

Bulging veins are commonly surface branches fed by a refluxing source vein.
